Education CS Amina Decries High Number of Pregnant KCPE Candidates

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Amina Mohamed on Thursday expressed her dismay after monitoring KCPE exams across the country.

Addressing the media shortly after the candidates sat their last paper, CS Amina raised concern over the high rates of teenage pregnancy in the country.

"The KCPE incidences show the rate of teenage pregnancy in our country is very high," she stated confirming that at least 9 students delivered babies during the exam period.

"A high number of candidates became mothers during the three days of KCPE. If this is the case all-year round, then the country could be facing a real crisis," the CS concluded.

Accordingly, the CS ordered the Ministry officials to liaise with relevant stakeholders to assess the magnitude of the teenage pregnancy menace.

Besides, Amina revealed that she would work with Cabinet Secretary for Health Sicily Kanini Kariuki to have special facilities in hospitals to cater for sick students sitting for the exams.

"The number of candidates doing exams in health facilities is on the rise. We need some special facilities in our hospitals so that candidates can concentrate and focus on getting the best results that they can manage," she stated.

The CS equally exuded confidence in the credibility of the KCPE exams attributing it to the multi-agency approach in the management of the exercise.

Senior ministry officials including CSs, CASs, and PSs personally oversaw the opening of the 459 containers used to store exams in the sub-counties.

"During monitoring, we witnessed various agencies working together with the single aim of delivering credible examinations. We will all keep it up," Amina added.
