Kenya Power Confirms Switch to New Tariffs

Kenya Power and Lighting Company on Thursday sent a text message to customers informing them that a switch to new, lower tariffs was completed.

Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) Director General Pavel Oimeke had announced reduced tariffs on November 1, soon after President Uhuru Kenyatta  called for power tariffs to be lowered.

"We wish to inform our customers that following successful implementation of the new tariffs, vending for prepaid tokens has resumed," the message from Kenya Power read.

Domestic users will pay Sh10/Kwh down from Sh12 while small commercial consumers will pay Sh10 down from Sh15/Kwh from November 1.

The above rates will, however, only be applicable  for purchases of less than 100 units.

Charges on consumption of 100 kilowatts and above remain the same.

Kenya Power's prepaid system had been temporarily shut down to allow for the changes.

The shutdown lasted for 14 hours from Wednesday.

Many Kenyans took to social media to share complaints over funds already sent via mobile money.

The new tariffs came as a relief to Kenyans but many called for greater transparency at the company with top officials implicated in corruption scandals.
