3 Charged for Fraudulently Obtaining KSh1.2 M in KDF Recruitment Scam

Three people were, on Monday, charged with fraudulently obtaining Ksh1.2 million in a fake Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruitment scheme.

The three, Andrew Musungu, Josephat Barasa and Reagan Shahenza, were accused of obtaining the money from Kakamega residents with the false promise of getting their children a job at KDF.

In the first instance, the three conned Mary Abona of Ksh 733,250 while promising that they could secure her son a spot in KDF.

In yet another scheme, they fraudulently obtained Ksh 504,650 from the parents of Faith Khaombi to help her join the academy.

The three are, therefore, facing 13 counts of defrauding the public from February 20 to June 18, 2018.

Prosecutor of the case, Paul Juma, told the court that the three had forged KDF documents and that the first accused skipped court in an earlier case he was accused of a similar offence.

“The accused face separate charges of forging KDF identification cards and purporting to be genuine,” stated Juma.

Appearing before Chief magistrate Bildad Ochieng', the three, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges labelled against them.

The prosecutor, further, asked the court not to release one of the accused, Mr Musungu, on grounds that he had been freed on a Ksh 100,000 bond for a similar offence.

The other two were released on a Ksh1 million bond each with Musungu remaining in custody.

The case is set for hearing on May 9, 2019.
