Govt Unveils New Stringent Measures on Betting

The government, through the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), has released a statement laying down new stringent rules that will run the betting industries.

In the statement, Liti Wambua, a director in the board, directed that all outdoor advertisements that are related to betting or any other form of gambling and lottery games had been banned.

All betting firms were also directed to cease all advertisements on social media.

The statement, that labeled gambling as a demerit good with potential to hurt its consumers, went on to also ban any betting advertisement between the hours of 6 am and 10 pm.

Most celebrities who have endorsed gambling products might find themselves without a job as the board also made it illegal for celebrities to endorse these operations.

The board also informed the betting firms that they have to forward all advertisements for approval before they are aired on any media.

The government also made it clear for the firms that all the adverts they run must have a warning accompanying it.

BCLB has given all the stakeholders involved until May 30, 2019, to comply with the new regulations.

This comes a few weeks after Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang'i sent a warning to the betting firms over what he termed as tax evasion.
