16 Govt Officials Suspended Over Corruption & Theft

Nandi County Governor, Stephen Sang, made wholesale suspensions of his officials on Tuesday after numerous accusations of corruption.

The 16 officials, three of whom were members of the county executive committee, were forced to stand down pending investigations after the latest reports disclosed wanton graft within the government.

Governor Sang swooped to action after investigations into a robbery that occurred at the county's Transport and Infrastructure warehouses on April 19, 2019.

A consignment of 99 tyres valued at an estimated Ksh3.4 million were stolen during the break-in leading to several arrests by Kapsabet police.

Consequently, three drivers, three mechanics and the Chief Officer (CO) of the Transport & Infrastructure, Jonah Biwot.

The Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) project manager, Julius Kiprotich was among those suspended following the weekend arrest of 4 officials from the same project.

They were arrested over the weekend after being found in possession of construction materials worth millions of shillings meant for the setting up of 60 learning centres within the county.

During his public address, Governor Sang went on to name the special committee he had set up to handle each of the cases and recommend necessary actions thereafter.

Timon Lel was appointed to head the ad-hoc committee that is expected to provide a detailed report at the end of the investigations and hearings.

The Nandi Governor also appointed 5 new officials to act as interim heads of the various departments that had been left vacant following the suspensions.

Elly Kurgat CECM Transport & Infrastructure, Jacob Tanui  CECM Education, Kiplimo Lagat CECM Lands and Environment, Scholastica Tuwei CO Transport & Infrastructure and Jonathan Misoi CO Education were the individuals chosen to act as interim heads.
