KRA Responds to Claims of Using Huduma Namba to Nab Tax Cheats

The Kenya Revenue Authority has come out to clear the air over the information circulating in the media claiming that the authority will use data from the Huduma Namba forms to nab tax cheats.

An official from KRA who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke on phone stated that the information should be considered rumours as it did not emanate from their offices.

The official further clarified that the taxman was pre-occupied with finding a successor for the retiring Commissioner General John Njiraini.

“The information should be treated as what it is, a rumour because we haven't released such information or any other information regarding such,” the official stated.

“At the moment the authority is pre-occupied with succession issues and cleaning the image of the taxman and therefore haven’t had time to release such statements,” the official added.

KRA also stated that the financial experts that alleged this information were misinformed and whatever they say should be considered their personal opinions.

Reports had been circulating that the taxman would use the data collected during the Huduma Namba registration to expand its tax base by nabbing all those who have been evading tax.

A story by the People Daily indicated that an expert from Ernst and Young stated that the tax man was set to use data such as a physical address, home county and information of parents to locate where one lives.

The reports also claimed that KRA would use the information to nab tax evading landlords as it revealed house ownership.
