Sonko's Ultimatum to The Star Over HIV Story

Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has demanded an apology from The Star newspaper in the next three days over a story they published over his HIV status.

Sonko had accused The Star of defaming him by publishing a story claiming that he was HIV positive.

He announced that if The Star management failed to apologise to him and his family, he would have little option but to take legal action against them.

Citizen Digital reported that through his lawyer Cecil Miller, the Nairobi Governor stated that the publication's apology should be acceptable to him and given similar prominence to the initial publication.

The governor stated that the malicious and spiteful statements were published without any inquiry over the truthfulness or falsity and counter-checking with him.

An article published in The Star had the headline 'How HIV report helped Sonko out of Kamiti Maximum Prison'.

The Star stated that the governor had been released from Kamiti prison three months prior to completing his one year sentence.

According to The Star, Sonko complained that the story portrayed him as fugitive as well as an individual lacking in moral decency.

They further went on to claim that the medical evidence was allegedly on the record over the flamboyant Governors HIV status.

These are contained in a controversial judgment issued by High Court judge Samuel Oguk (now deceased) in application No. 80 of 2001,” the article read.

The article also alleged that Sonko had earlier in 1998 escaped from Shimo la Tewa prison but was re-arrested in 1999.
