Dr Julius Muia: Man Replacing Kamau Thugge at Treasury

On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta appointed Dr Julius Monzi Muia as the Principal Secretary for the National Treasury.

He will replace PS Kamau Thugge, who is currently facing corruption charges over the Kimwarer and Arror dam scandals.

Prior to his appointment, Dr Muia served as the PS in State Department for Planning, which will now be taken up by Torome Saitoti.

He boasts of a wealth of experience in delivering on complex assignments in the public and private sector while working with different cultures.

The PS was the Director-General of the Vision 2030 Delivery Secretariat, which operates under the Office of the President.

Prior to this, Dr. Muia served as the Secretary and CEO of the National Economic and Social Council, which is a government think tank on national policies and strategies. 

He has worked as an auditor and consultant in Kenya and United Kingdom and has served at board level as head of finance, IT and strategy in leading companies in Kenya.

Among the positions he's held over the years include; Assistant Audit Manager at Price Waterhouse, Group Financial Controller (Lonrho Hotels), Finance Director at Safari Park holdings Group Finance Director at Unga Group and the Finance Director and Chief Operating Officer at Housing Finance Company of Kenya.

"In addition to being an all-round expert in corporate finance and accounting, I have special skills in formulating and executing corporate strategy, feasibility studies, public issues of equity and debt capital, setting up joint ventures, as well as business reorganisations and restructuring," reads a section of his LinkedIn profile.

He holds a First Class Honours Degree in Accounting; Masters Degree and PhD in Finance from the University of Nairobi’s School of Business.

He is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K); Certified Public Secretary (CPS-K).

Since 2015, Dr Muia has been teaching finance and public policy to postgraduate students at Strathmore Business University.
