TSC Blocks Teachers Pay Rise

Teachers Service Commission on Friday moved to stop teachers' pay rise.

The 103,624 teachers affected are said to be members of Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).

According to the employer, the execution of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) could not go on using career progression guidelines.

This comes after KNUT gave a breakdown of pay increment it expected the government to implement in August 2019.

According to the union's list, school principals were to be the biggest winners of the pay rise, taking home Ksh16,503 more.

The projected increment reflected the implementation of the third phase of the CBA that was to cost the government Ksh13 billion.

The union's computation was prompted by reports that the TSC might not implement the pay deal because of a recent court order against it.

The commission thus filed an application seeking to reverse an earlier order in favour of KNUT on appraisals, and promotion of teachers.

However, TSC boss, Nancy Macharia argued that, if the order was implemented, it would be difficult to effect the third phase of the CBA which runs from 2019 to 2020.

The teachers' union has however dismissed the application saying it was a tactic by TSC not to implement the CBA.
