Fraudsters Swindle Ksh1 Million from Unemployed Kenyans

A fake job advertisement left more than a thousand unemployed Kenyans disappointed after they found out that they had been conned.

Nairobi News reported on Thursday, October 24, that the youth realized they had been swindled off their money when they arrived for training that was promised before the job.

The job advertisement was published by fraudsters who claimed to be under Solar Africa Energy-Kenya, a company that was discovered by Nairobi police to be fake.

The company was looking to employ drivers, electricians and solar panel distributors baiting the victims with payment and a three-year contract.

The job alert noted that successful applicants would be paid Ksh42,372 and their contract would start on November 1, 2019, to the end of October 31, 2022.

According to the advertisement, the company would recruit 82 drivers, 96 electricians and 192 solar panel distributors.

The applicants were, however, asked to part with Ksh1,000 that was stated as the application fee before the three-day training in Nairobi.

They were supposed to present themselves at Emory Hotel in Kileleshwa where the training would take place.

The deadline for application was set for October 21, 2019. The duped candidates later discovered that the company did not have a website and that the real company was based in South Africa and not Kenya as the alert mentioned.

"We are investigating the source of this information because up to now the numbers which were given as contact are not going through," Kilimani OCPD Lucas Ogara confirmed.

The South African company through their Twitter also confirmed that the job alert was a scam and that they had no branch in Kenya.
