The war against corruption has taken an interesting turn after the Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti turned his guns towards two cabinet secretaries alongside other government officials.
According to a report carried by Daily Nation, Kinoti revealed on Saturday, December 7, that a number of high ranking officials were set to be interrogated over the Ksh29 billion Itare Dam scandal.
The publication further intimated that among those reportedly expected to address the matter alongside Water CS Simon Chelugui, who has since been grilled, are Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri and his Devolution counterpart Eugene Wamalwa.
Quoting police sources close to the scandal, the paper also disclosed that the DCI was allegedly pursuing former Treasury CS Henry Rotich and his PS Kamau Thugge to shed more light on the scandal.
Others who will be facing the agency are Water PS Joseph Irungu, a number of PSs and the entire Rift Valley Water Services Board members.
In his address, Kinoti intimated that summons had already issued out to some individuals and the grilling is expected to commence next week.
“They are expected to come for questioning next week.
“Those who we will determine played a part in the stealing of money borrowed by taxpayers for what was supposed to be a good project will be taken to court.” declared Kinoti without revealing their identities.
Roughly Ksh11 million has already been paid out to an Italian firm that was tasked with its construction, CMC Di Ravena, which has since gone bankrupt.
It is believed that some of the already paid out amounts were paid as kickbacks to leaders who helped the embattled firm win the tender.
In his defence, Chelugui, however, argued that he was not in office during the procurement of the project.
"Itare Dam started in 2014 and that was when it was signed, sealed and delivered. I, however, took over the office in 2018 and found that payment had already been done and work was going on," he explained.
On Friday, December 6, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko was arrested in Voi after the DPP ordered his arrest over allegations of misappropriating over Ksh357 million together with other county officials.
