Kidero's Unusual Marriage Proposal to Tom Mboya's Daughter

Almost every girl dreams of the day her special someone will go down on one knee, at some romantic spot, and pop the question that will lead to the theoretical 'happy ever after'.

However, for Susan Mboya, the former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero's wife and daughter of the late trade unionist and activist, Tom Mboya, the purchase of her engagement ring was not exactly the definition of romantic.

In an interview with The Standard in 2017, Susan narrated how she and the former governor were in a South African mall when they walked past a jeweller and Kidero asked her to get a ring of her choice.

"He casually asked what ring I wanted. I told him to surprise me. [You] know what he said?

"When you have time, go in there, pick out what you want, tell me and then I will surprise you," she told the publication amidst laughter.

She, however, disclosed that the former Nairobi County boss did not waste time when it came to proposing to her.

"He went on one knee in a perfect setting and ticked every box in terms of what I would have wanted in a proposal," she narrated.

The former Nairobi County first lady added that at the time she was a resident in South Africa, where she lived until Kidero convinced her to come back to Kenya.

"I will never forget what he told me. He stated, 'You can either be a small fish in a big pond or you can come back home and do something big.'"

She stated that the two did not take long before they got married as they only dated a year and a half before their wedding at the All Saints Cathedral with dinner thereafter at the Grand Regency.

"The wedding was fairly small by Nairobi standards. We were not a young pair so we said we were going to have a grown-up wedding in the evening with a reception at night where friends could just have a good time," she stated.
