UPDATE:
Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i issued a statement assuring the country that there were no Kenyan casualties.
US Senator Jim Risch on Monday, January 6, shared a tweet suggesting there were Kenyan casualties in the Al-Shabaab terrorist attack in Lamu on Sunday, January 5.
Risch, a Republican Senator representing Idaho who also chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, sent his condolences as he condemned the shocking attack.
"I am saddened to learn that American and Kenyan lives were lost during a heinous terrorist attack on a Kenya-US operating base early this morning. The US-Kenya partnership remains strong in the fight against al-Shabaab and global terrorism," he wrote.
In their statement issued after the attack, KDF made no mention of any Kenyan soldiers or civilians killed in the havoc that ensued at Manda Bay airfield.
The United States (US) military confirmed that one American service-man and two Department of Defense (DoD) contractors were killed in the militant attack on the naval base shared by Kenyan and US forces.
The statement by the US Africa Command further confirmed that several air-crafts were damaged.
KDF, however, only disclosed that four of the attackers were killed and the breach successfully repulsed. They also confirmed the recovery of several weapons from the alleged terrorists.
It was additionally revealed that a fuel tank caught fire amidst the chaos but was eventually contained.
Contacted by Kenyans.co.ke, KDF stated that there was 'currently no official communication' on the question of Kenyan casualties.
Government Spokesperson Lt Col Cyrus Oguna directed the matter to Lt Col Paul Njuguna of the Public Affairs Office who was yet to respond to our queries by the time of publication.
