UoN Vice-Chancellor Dares Magoha With Bold Move

The University of Nairobi Student's Association (UNSA) on Sunday, January 19 called on Education CS George Magoha to expedite the process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor (VC).

"Earlier there had been claims that there was mischief in the process of VC's appointment. We want to say that this time round that the matter be investigated as called upon by the education CS," UoN main campus Secretary-General Byron stated in his address to the media.

The student leader went on to reveal that they were fully behind Magoha's choice of Professor Isaac Mbeche as the acting VC.

CS Magoha made the headlines when he ordered for the dissolution of the entire UoN council comprising of Flora Mtuweta Mighulo, Jocelyn Marie Rarieya, Hassan Abdi Mohamud, Isaac Chebon Kiprop and Kariuki Muchemi, and revoked the appointment of Professor Stephen Gitahi Kiama as the school's VC.

The public notice sent out by UoN Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Gitahi on January 19, 2020.

On his part, Professor Kiama remained adamant and maintained that due process was followed during his appointment.

In a daring move, the professor issued a notice published by the Sunday Nation, stating that anyone who purported to carry out any business on behalf of the office of the vice-chancellor was an impostor.

"This is to inform all stakeholders and collaborators that any person or institution entering into a contract with any other person other than the legally appointed Vice-Chancellor, Prof Stephen Kiama Gitahi does so at their own peril," reads a section of the notice.

"Any resolutions originating from any other university organs, which by statute are chaired by the vice-chancellor, if chaired by a person other than the legally appointed VC or any other person expressly authorised by him in writing, similarly will not be binding," it further reads.

The embattled appointee went on to sign off, implicitly referring to himself as the VC, despite CS Magoha's appointing Professor Mbeche for the role.
