The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have launched fresh probes on the appointments and conduct of officials in Nairobi County.
A report published by the Capital FM on Wednesday, February 5, indicates that DCI boss George Kinoti said investigations of corrupt and unethical appointments of the county officials are underway even as the EACC called upon 14 officials for questioning.
Among them are members of embattled Governor Mike Sonko’s cabinet recently appointed in a wave of changes that saw two CECs sacked, others reinstalled and two more nominated.
The anti-corruption agency is also looking into the procedure implemented by the governor to nominate Ann Mwendwa, currently serving as Chief Officer in Disaster Management as Sonko's deputy.
Kinoti penned a letter to the county secretary seeking the minutes of the County Public Service Board on the appointment of Embakasi East sub-county Ward Administrator alongside minutes on the appointment of the current County Liquor Board as well as a certified copy of the attendance register for members of the county assembly for the last six months.
EACC is seeking to call upon Leboo Ole Morintat (County Secretary), CECMs Mohamed Dagane ( Roads), Charles Kerich(Lands and Urban planning), Veska Kangongo(Devolution and Public service), Lucia Mulwa(Education), Hitan Majevda(Health), Newton Munene(ICT), Allan Igambi(Finance and Economics), Larry Wambua(Environment), George Oswewe(nominee Trade), Karen Nyamu (nominee Agriculture CECM) for questioning.
Other to be questioned include Lydia Kwamboka (County Attorney), Peter Mugo (Chief of Staff) and Villy Magero (Records and archive management).
Governor Mike Sonko is currently facing corruption charges involving a Ksh357 million scandal and is barred from accessing office. The corruption charges have resulted in the High Court’s orders for Governor Sonko to give up his travel documents.
A report by Citizen TV on Wednesday, January 5, however, has hinted at his plans to fly out of the country to the United Arab Emirates for official reasons.
An application was made to the High Court requesting the release of Governor Sonko's travel documents.
The application detailed that he is expected in the UAE to attend the 10th World Urban Forum that will run from Saturday, February 8, to Thursday, February 13.
He on February 4, breathed a sigh of relief after a court directed the Asset Recovery Agency to unblock all five of his bank accounts.
