Sonko Implicated in Ksh 357M Scandal After EACC Grilling

Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Wednesday, September 4, implicated Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, in a Ksh357 million garbage tender scandal.

According to a report by The Star, some Ksh20 million is reported to have been traced to the governor's accounts. The funds were reportedly a kickback from the firms that won the garbage tenders.

The paper further indicated that the money was paid through proxies in an attempt to avoid raising suspicion.

The governor was grilled by the agency in relation to corruption in the award of the tenders for 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Appearing before EACC, Sonko recorded 13 different statements and denied any involvement in the procurement.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, the governor's communication director disputed the corruption claims arguing that it was politically motivated.

"Those are what we call political enemies. Those are political dictators who are there to distract his excellency the governor from providing quality services."

"So they are trying to divert attention from what he is doing so far so that people can focus on other malicious allegations," argued the director.

Asked who he thought was behind the allegations, the communications expert explained that many people in the political arena were trying to bring down the governor.

"When you are in power, your tracks are straight and you have worked tremendously without any support, people will automatically fight you in a big way. They will try their level best to find everything not working well," he continued.

Sonko was, on Tuesday, September 3, spent over eight hours at the Integrity Center where he was questioned in connection with the garbage tender award.
