Two people alleged to be part of a six-man gang behind robberies in Migori County were shot dead on Sunday, March 1 after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) ambushed them sparking a shoot-out.
The rest of the gang members reportedly escaped with gun-shot wounds with a DCI officer rushed to hospital after sustaining a gun-shot wound as well. The DCI told Kenyans.co.ke that the shoot-out took place at around 9.30 pm.
According to a statement issued on Monday, March 2, the DCI had received information that the gang planned to carry out a robbery at Allaxis Hotel located along the Migori-Rongo road.
Allaxis Hotel is a popular hotel located just five minutes away from the Migori town centre.
The detectives reportedly laid a trap at the hotel, ambushing the gang members who arrived on motorcycles.
According to the DCI, the group of six was asked to surrender but they failed to comply, sparking a shoot-out.
"During the shoot out, two suspects were fatally injured but the rest escaped with gunshot wounds.
"A DCI detective was also shot on the right shoulder and is currently receiving treatment," the statement read in part.
The statement further disclosed that the injured officer was in stable condition and was receiving treatment.
It was further revealed that among items recovered by the DCI were an AK47 rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition, a flashlight and a rungu (baton).
The DCI further stated that they remained in pursuit of the escaped suspects.
The report from Migori comes barely a week after 7 suspected criminals were shot dead in Isinya, Kajiado County by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
The slain suspects were in a Toyota Fielder vehicle and reportedly refused to stop when flagged down sparking the shoot-out.
