President Uhuru Kenyatta has taken a hands-on approach in his second term, personally inspecting projects that mean a lot to him.
In his latest efforts, President Kenyatta drove himself to Nyayo Stadium for the third time on Sunday, June 7 to inspect the ongoing renovations.
Kenyans.co.ke reliably learned that during the impromptu visit which was kept under wraps, the head of state complained about the slow progress of the renovations.
He was particularly concerned about the development of the office block and swimming pool which are yet to be completed.
Nyayo Stadium, which is undergoing a total uplift, was expected to be ready for use by Thursday, June 11, after being closed for four years.
“He called for the suspension of stadium re-opening until it was fully completed and called for its speedy completion,” stated a source who requested anonymity.
President Kenyatta was accompanied by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta, Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, Sports Kenya (SK) Director-General Pius Metto, SK Chairman Fred Muteti, some contractors and Nyayo Stadium sports managers.
Billy Arocho, a football stakeholder, who was at the venue told Goal.com that Uhuru asked the contractors to put up images of Kenyan sportsmen and women around the facility.
“He wants to honour sportsmen and women by having their pictures inside and outside the stadium. They deserve it because they have brought great honour to the country,” the footballer disclosed.
So far, the football pitch and the basketball court have been completed and have changing rooms and VIP lounges made to match world standards
In February, President Kenyatta drove himself to Nyayo Stadium to inspect the preparation of the late former President Daniel Moi’s requiem mass.
He again got behind the wheel and sped to the stadium to participate in the Beyond Zero Half Marathon, catching participants unawares as some began screaming after spotting him cruising in with a lean security team.
