Transport CS James Macharia on Friday, June 19 announced the appointment of Eng Silas Kinoti as the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) Director-General.
Eng Kinoti has been the acting DG at Kura for more than four years, after taking up the job in September 2015. It is unclear why the Kura Board failed to fill the top position over the past four years.
The appointment comes two months after the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura) and the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (Kerra) separately advertised for the positions of director-general on Tuesday, April 21.
"Engineer Kinoti's appointment follows a competitive and transparent recruitment process that was conducted by the board of Kura," CS Macharia disclosed in a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke.
Kinoti took over following the exit of acting boss Peter Mundinia to Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHA), where he is the director-general.
Eng Kinoti will now serve as Kura boss on a three-year contract, renewable once.
"We are confident that his skills and wealth of experience will position him well to drive Kura forward to champion the Urban Roads Agenda in the country," Macharia noted.
The Kenya Roads Board last month released maintenance funds to the three road agencies.
In the latest allocations, KeNHA got Ksh10.7 billion, Kerra was allocated Ksh6.5 billion, while Kura got Ksh 3 billion.
Kura is a statutory body established by the Kenya Roads Acts, 2007 aimed at management, development, rehabilitation and maintenance of all public roads in cities and municipalities except where roads are categorised as national roads.
Due to rapid urbanization, the network under Kura has increased to slightly above 4,000 Km of road.
