A family is in mourning following a tragic accident on Tuesday, September 22, that claimed a couple's lives during a family drive.
The accident which occurred along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway was a head-on collision between a personal car and a matatu.
The accident, which claimed the two lives on the spot, took place near Gilgil Town.
Two children aged four and two years sustained injuries alongside six occupants of the matatu.
Gilgil police boss John Onditi confirmed that the car collided with the matatu while attempting to overtake a lorry which later hit it from behind.
"In the process, we have lost a couple while their two children aged four and two years respectively have been injured," Onditi told The Standard.
The survivors were taken to Gilgil Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
Images from the accident showed a mangled up black car and the matatu, belonging to Bungoma Line Shuttle, was completely wrecked.
As of August 2020, National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) raised an alarm over increased road fatalities especially with pedestrians being the biggest casualties.
The authority further indicated that accidents had been costing the state a loss amounting to Ksh300 billion every year.
The data showed that 3,567 people lost their lives in 2019, an increase from 3,337 recorded in 2018.
Out of the fatalities, 1,376 were pedestrians, 875 motorcyclists and 565 passengers.
