One person has died in an early morning accident involving a commuter train and a lorry at Donholm, Nairobi County on Tuesday, November 3.

The lorry was crossing the railway line when the train rammed into it.

Wreckage from the scene of incident showed a completely dismantled lorry with its parts scattered on both sides of the railway track while the train only got a slight dent.

The commuter train is said to have been on its way to carry passengers from Pipeline, when the incident took place.

Commuters from Makadara and Donholm who were headed to the city were left stranded.

It was not immediately clear what led to the accident or how many people were aboard the train and the lorry.

The accident comes just weeks after the government raised concerns over a spike in road accidents since President Uhuru Kenyatta opened bars and reduced curfew hours.

Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai noted that the rising cases of road traffic accidents across the country were attributed to failure by drivers to comply with basic road safety requirements.

To curb the vice, the IG stated that the police would conduct random drunk driving tests in all major towns.

A statement from NTSA  in October indicated that 2,689 lives were lost between January 1 and September 30, 2020, compared to 2,655 during the same period in 2019, an increase of 1.3 per cent.

The government is stiffening measures to reduce road accidents in the country to ensure a reduced loss of life.

As part of the measures, the government launched the Nurse in Hand Highway Emergency Response Centre at Delamare, Naivasha.

Nurse in Hand is a mobile and web-based accident and emergency response platform that alerts registered paramedics found within the geo-mapped area as well as classified hospitals in case of an accident.
