Unemployment levels have been rising with the Covid-19 pandemic. A report by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) released in September 2020, showed that Kenya's unemployment rate had doubled in the past three months from 5.2% to 10.4%.

In the latest quarterly labour force report, the government agency observed that 1,841,918 Kenyans were unemployed in the months of April, May and June 2020, up from 961,666 reported in the first quarter.

The media industry has not been spared either with some stations laying off their staff to cut on losses.

Major media stations have fired hundreds of workers in restructuring plans with Media Max laying off over 117 employees.

Nation Media commenced on its restructuring plans in July 2020 where over 100 people including anchor Ken Mijungu were fired.

"In this journey, the group seeks to radically change its business model from print advertising and physical reader copy to digital advertising, e-paper subscriptions and content-driven reader revenue.

"Regrettably, this will result in a reduction of our workforce effective Friday, July 3, 2020,” NMG Group CEO Stephen Gitama announced.
