Former Molo MP Jacob Macharia on Wednesday, November 25, highlighted a worrying trend in the area which involved several deaths on a railway bridge that cuts through the county.

Dubbed the bridge of death, the elevated railway platform claimed the life of a 64-year old man on November 24, making it the eighth life lost over the last few months.

"We appeal to constituents to avoid using the bridge and take the option of walking under it though longer. Those picnicking on the bridge should also take care to avoid accidental falls," the area MP pleaded.

Michina assistant chief Kennedy Kiago said the latest victim was walking home along the railway line when the accident happened at around 5 pm.

The trestle bridge erected during the colonial era was the typical structure approved for the Nakuru-Kisumu rail line.

However, several decades later, the bridge is now mostly associated with evil spirits and death by the locals.

Several people have been known to venture to the center of the bridge and jumping straight of - plunging to their death.

On December 15, 2018, a somber mood engulfed Molo after a woman tripped and fell off the infamous bridge, dying on the spot. Witnesses said they saw the woman tumbling down and it was not clear what happened.

There were other conflicting reports, claiming that she was under the influence of alcohol leading to her demise.

The Nakuru-Kisumu line bridges were built in the early 1900s and marked for a lifespan of 150 years.

The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) is currently undertaking an ambitious plan for rehabilitation and expansion to encourage economic recovery after the coronavirus pandemic.

The recent refurbishment of sections of the Metre Gauge Railway (MGR) line is expected to play a significant function in sustaining businesses in the counties it serves.
