Details have emerged on former Nairobi Governor's stay at the Nairobi Hospital where he is being treated ahead of a case where he is facing terrorism-related charges.

Sonko is receiving treatment under the watchful eye of anti-terror police who are guarding his ward room on a 24 hour basis.

The ex-Governor's ward is in the private wing of the hospital, reserved for VIPs, but access to the flamboyant politician is highly restricted.

Sonko has no access to a mobile phone and has been silent on social media platforms where he is an avid contributor.

Ben Mulwa, Sonko’s spokesperson, told Kenyans.co.ke on Thursday, February 11 that Sonko is under good care, which is what matters. He also added that Sonko is under guard and did not want to comment on the preferential treatments or on the health status of his boss.

“All I can say is that he is under better treatment and guarded well and that’s what matters. All the other issues I cannot comment about,” Said Mulwa.

On February 9, Sonko was released on a bail of Ksh300,000. He was then presented to answer to terror charges at a Kahawa West court. This was after detectives said that he was financing a secret militant group for its operations.

The DCI, however, requested 30 days detention for Sonko in order for more investigations to be carried out. Earlier on February 9 before being presented to court, the former governor was rushed to hospital after suffering a stomach problem.

Besides terror charges, Sonko is also facing fraud charges relating to a flawed tender process in a city company that was seeking to collect revenue in the Nairobi County.

In May 2019, Sonko was accused of invading Buruburu estate and assaulting civilians. He denied the charges pressed against him.

While in jail, Sonko lamented that an unknown assailant had attempted to poison him, rendering his life in danger. He also said that he was being tortured by some of the police officers at the Gigiri police station by making him sleep on the floor.

After the prosecution, Sonko was denied bail, being termed as a threat to the evidence and witnesses against him. They claimed that in 1998 he escaped Shimo la Tewa Prison.
