The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) on Monday, March 29 issued an update on how Kenyans can participate in the ongoing recruitment of a new Chief Justice as speculations continue to grow on who will take over the seat previously held by David Maraga.
The judiciary Chief Registrar Anne Amadi said that the JSC acknowledges that involving the public in the process is very essential since the CJ’s role has a vast impact on everyone in the country.
The statement also provided the means through which feedbacks and comments from Kenyans on the post candidates can be sent.
“Any person with relevant information is welcome to submit the same in writing to the Commission’s Secretariat at the Kenya Reinsurance Plaza or by post.” Amadi said.
The public is also notified that feedbacks can be sent through recruitment@jsc.go.ke for anyone who cannot make a physical submission.
Amadi also said that there is a handbook on the JSC website which contains the candidates’ profile which can be used with the public to formulate their feedbacks.
“To facilitate meaningful public participation in the process, the Commission has prepared a handbook with simplified yet detailed information on the selection process, including a guide for media houses who wish to broadcast the live interviews. It has also provided the profiles of the candidates, their sample writings and the written memoranda from stakeholders which have all been posted to the Commission’s website for easy access,” she said.
The recruitment that has attracted judges and senior lawyers in Kenya started is set to replace former CJ David Maraga who retired on January 11.
They include; Justice Said Chitembwe, Justice William Ouko, Justice Martha Koome, Justice Njagi Marete, Justice Mathews Nderi, Senior Counsel Fredrick Ngatia, Prof Kameri Mbote, Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, Prof Wekesa Moni and Ms Alice Jepkoech.
So far, the commission has met with Judges of the Supreme Court, representatives of other Superior Court Judges, judicial officers and staff, representatives of Parliament, the Executive, county governments, the Law Society of Kenya, Kenya Private Sector Alliance and other stakeholders who have provided their input on the recruitment process and the planned interviews.
The participation is open to all Kenyans and should be made before the mentioned day of the first interview.
