A section of the Uhuru Highway will be closed for 20 days to pave way for the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway along Mombasa Road.

In a notice on April 10, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) stated that the section between Bunyala and Nyayo Stadium would be affected.

The disruption would last from Friday, April 9, 2021 to Thursday, April 29, 2021.

With the construction and closure of the section, traffic will flow from Nyayo Stadium roundabout to Lusaka road, Workshop Road and onto Bunyala Road before proceeding to Uhuru Highway.

"Motorists are kindly advised to use alternative routes. We apologise for any inconveniences that may be caused as we endeavor to provide an efficient, safe and reliable road network," the roads agency stated.

Motorists using Uhuru highway and Mombasa Road have had to contend with traffic with reduced lanes due to the construction of the Expressway.

The same has been exacerbated during peak hours and as commuters rush home to comply with the 8 p.m. curfew as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

During an inspection visit in March 2021, Transport CS James Macharia revealed that the project was 30 percent complete with officials projecting a timely completion in December 2021 and an expected opening for public use by April 2022.

The road is designed to accommodate all types of vehicles as well as motorcycles with systems set up to ensure compliance.

It is designed to make traffic from Nairobi Central Business District to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) more convenient and efficient.

"The new highway will also carry about 85 percent of all cargo and commuter traffic for the highly built areas of Athi River, Kitengela, Mlolongo, Syokimau, Utawala, Embakasi, South B and South C, and surrounding areas.

"The new expressway will also be the main transport artery that will carry traffic to Westlands where it will connect with the James Gichuru-Rironi highway," CS Macharia said in a statement to newsrooms.
