Karangi Hands Over KDF Reins To Mwathethe

Lieutenant-General Samson Mwathethe has taken over as Chief of Defense Forces from Julius Karangi in a colorful ceremony at Department of Defense Headquarters in Hurlingham, Nairobi.

This follows Mwathethe's appointment as the country's 10th General by President Uhuru Kenyatta into the position after Karangi's retirement which marked the end of his 42 year military career.

The handing over ceremony had earlier been scheduled for the 28th of April but was later moved to Monday 4th of May.

Mwathethe previously served as the Vice-Chief of Defense Forces.

He takes up the new office amid increased Al Shabaab threat in the country, and KDF's continued operations against the militia in Somalia.

The new military boss is set to be sworn in tomorrow.
