The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) wants the national government to increase capitation fees to schools.
The Union argues the number of children seeking education increased exponentially making it necessary to increase the capitation.
The KUPPET chairman and Emuhaya MP Omboko Milemba argued that the capitation fees have never been reviewed for the introduction of free primary and subsided secondary education despite the increasing number of children joining learning institutions.
The union boss noted that the crash-course learning programs due to the Covid-19 pandemic had made the situation harder for parents to clear fees.
He argued the situation increased the burden for parents as school terms were shortened and endured together at the expense of students.
"Parents are already feeling the pinch because they will be required to dig deep into their pockets to pay fees again," Milemba noted.
The MP argued that parents and school heads will be overwhelmed if the Government declines to increase the capitation.
"Increasing capitation will reduce fees payable by the parents and help head teachers to utilize the funds on improving infrastructural development in their institutions," Milemba argued.
The Government has remitted Ksh22,444 per head to cater for learning materials, medical insurance and activity charges.
However, KUPPET wants the amount to be increased to Sh32,000 to relieve the parents and empower head teachers.
The union also wants the government to release the money in full to enhance smooth running of schools contrary to the planned installments to be spread across the year.
