The Director of Criminal Investigations, George Kinoti, has expressed interest in meeting a matatu driver who was sacked on Friday, November 19, for attempting to report intoxicated students to the police.

In a statement, Kinoti expressed disappointment with the sacking of John Muthoni and asked that he contacts him urgently.

Muthoni had made a decision to drive 14 rowdy and intoxicated students to the police after he realised he could not contain them.

"Sadly, the 14 students (seven boys and seven girls) jumped from the windows of the moving matatu before Muthoni could reach the report desk," reads an excerpt of the statement by DCI.

In the evening, however, Muthoni updated his followers on Facebook saying that the Matatu SACCO he worked for had fired him.

"I have lost a job because of reporting students for using bhang and alcohol in the vehicle, now they are harassing me," he wrote.

Muthoni is requested to contact the DCI Director urgently through the toll free hotline 0800 722 203 or present himself at the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road, on November 29.

"He should have been commended by his employer for being brave and risking his life to report a serious crime of immorality that involved high school kids, instead of being shown the door.

"Drugs abuse is a crime that breaks the hearts of many parents and ruins the lives of many young men and women," reads the statement in part.

The investigative body noted that school-going children had become vulnerable to the temptation of drug usage during mid-term and holiday breaks.

"This might have contributed to recent acts of criminality, involving torching of school dormitories and other properties."

The 14 students who escaped have since been tracked down and investigations have began.

"Once investigations are completed, they will face the full force of the law," DCI concluded.
