Two police officers were killed on the morning of Saturday, December 4, after Al Shabaab militia opened fire on them in Bambo area of Mandera County.

A report by Counter Terrorism and National Security Intelligence indicated that the officers were attacked while delivering foodstuffs to a nearby camp.

Initially, the officers, who were travelling in a lorry belonging to the National Police Service, had dodged a grenade attack when the suspected Al Shabaab militants opened fire.

10 other officers, who were part of the transit, sustained serious injuries after the incident.

A witness confirmed that the driver of the truck had driven past the heavy gunfire on high speed but the tyres of the lorry were deflated.

The incident was confirmed by North Eastern Regional Police Commander, Rono Bunei. More officers have been deployed to the area to track and capture the militants.

The incident comes a day after police arrested a 22-year-old woman suspected to have been recruited to the Somali-based terror group. She was nabbed in Nandi County.

The terror suspect was arrested after they received a tip off from residents of Kamalambu village who were suspicious of the mysterious woman.

Police went ahead to add that the woman, who was cohabiting with an unidentified man, was taken into custody for further questioning.

In mid-November, a terror attack hit the Ugandan capital of Kampala - prompting the National Police Service to issue an alert advisory to its officers and to civilians.

NPS heightened surveillance in the country and deployed officers from special units to ensure security within major cities, towns and the Kenyan border after the three blasts in Uganda.

The blasts occurred a day after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced that it was offering a Ksh60 million cash reward for information on three terror suspects who had escaped from the Kamiti Maximum Prison.
