The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) is looking to raise an additional Ksh6 billion to promote its projected funding deficit.

The exam council stated that for the next five years, it will need Ksh50.6 billion, against the expected resources allocation of Ksh44.1 billion.

In the 2021-2026 KNEC strategic plan, unveiled on Wednesday, December 22, 2021, the exam council stated that it was looking to diversify sources of income amid the cash crunch.

KNEC also listed other exams among methods it will use to raise money for the smooth delivery of its mandate.

Although the government pays for the KCPE and KCSE examination fees for candidates, the exam council stated that it is looking at other exams as one of the ways to solve the fund's shortage.

KNEC argued that the government allocations remained constant for the last two years while the cost of administering exams has increased.

The council will also be seeking to partner with other institutions and professional bodies that require services related to examinations and assessment at a fee.

Further, the exam council stated that it shall generate money by assessing and certifying recognition of prior learning.

It will also print and sell mathematical tables internally as well as sell the feedback reports and past papers using an online platform.

According to KNEC, the council is looking to employ more staff members among them top managers, middle management team and operational cadre workers. The council stated that it will require 147 additional staff members.

KNEC will require 16 additional top managers in the next five years, 105 middle-level managers and 26 operational cadre staff over the same period of time.
