An old adage has it that not all heroes wear capes, at times it's just the kids playing next door who might carry the day.

This is true in the town of Maragua, Murang'a County whereby a number of children helped the police in nabbing two suspects who were on the list of ten most wanted criminals.

According to Maragua Police Station OCS Cleophas Mangut, the kids came out to usher the New Year on Friday, December 31, but ended up disrupting a crafty plan by the thugs. The suspects stormed a number of bars, targeting drunks and revelers and stealing valuables from them.

However, their plans would not come to fruition as the children screamed when the suspects attempted to mug a certain reveler. This alerted the police who would seize the attackers and arrest them.

"The children would scream at every incident of mugging and pickpocketing and give chase. Police on patrol would notice and respond, leading to arrests," Mangut stated.

The police boss noted that at one point, the children chased a pickpocket into a bar, where they entered and flushed him out. Their fearless act was lauded by Mangut who acknowledged their vital role.

"The input of the children was a blessing to us since they boldly took over the role of securing their town," he stated.

According to the police, seven muggers and five pickpockets were arrested during the night as the town reeled from the insecurity caused by the marauding criminals.

Murang'a South Sub-County Police Commander Alexander Shikondi noted that all bars had been instructed to close by 11pm but they defied the order- with some operating the whole night.

Kenyans seemingly rediscovered partying during the New Year's Eve with the excitement that filled the air. From fireworks, partying, chants, dance, Kenyans ushered the New year with a huge craze- especially after a lockdown denied them a similar opportunity the previous year.

However, with such festivities, pickpockets and muggers seize the chance to steal from unsuspecting Kenyans who are looking to have a good time.
