The trailblazing Redykyulass extraordinaire, Tony Njuguna, who is known for his comic imitation of Kenya's third president Mwai Kibaki, recounted a past incident that ruffled feathers.
During an interview on NTV to celebrate the former president, Njuguna reminisced the time that the skit ignited a storm as it came at a time the Kibaki family was confronting a number of issues.
The skit depicted how former first lady Lucy Kibaki raided Nation Media Group over a headline on its daily paper.
Njuguna detailed that the skit caught the attention of the then Police Commissioner Major Brigadier General Hussein Ali and leaders close to the former president.
Fearing for their lives, Njuguna and his crew had to go into hiding for almost a week.
"Maybe there were a few family issues during the time of Brigadier Hussein Ali whereby some very excited sycophants tried to get us arrested over the Kibaki-Lucy skit hence we had to hide for three days before being told that life was good," he stated.
Njuguna noted how the incident caught them by surprise for they had been accustomed to Kibaki's democratic regime as opposed to former president Moi's strict rule.
The comedian also pointed out several occasions when he and his fellow team got arrested during Moi's reign over skits seen as a mockery of the State.
"Mwai Kibaki was more democratic, he didn't care how we mimicked him," he pointed out.
He is known for starring in Redykyulass as well as Red Kona. Other comedians to feature on the shows alongside Njuguna include Daniel Ndambuki alias Churchill, presidential candidate Walter Mong'are and Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie.
Aside from acting, he has judged several shows including Top Comic, a show that searched for the next generation of comedians.
He is the current Creative Director at Scanad Group, a marketing services agency.
