Several People Dead After Land Cruiser Crashes Into Matatu

Several people are feared dead after a personal car rammed into a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) on Sunday morning, July 10, at Kombani, Mombasa- Ukunda highway. 

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, a source privy to the matter intimated that the driver of a white Land Cruiser V8 lost control at the bumps while on the way from Ukunda. 

The personal car rammed into a matatu that had parked on the side of the road while picking up passengers.

At the time of publishing this article, one person had been confirmed died while four passengers in the matatu-who were in critical condition- were rushed to hospital.

Five passengers in the personal vehicle, who sustained injuries, were also rushed to hospital. The driver of the matatu escaped the fatal accident albeit with grave injuries on his legs. 

Videos circulating on social media depicted the tragic situation, with witnesses rushing to the scene to help some of the victims who had been trapped in the wreckage. Police officers also arrived at the scene to restore order and control traffic flow. 

Speaking to the media, Kombani assistant chief, Khamisi Mwavyoga, claimed that the driver of the personal vehicle clocked in at over 200 kilometres per hour at the time of the accident. 

"The driver of the Toyota Land Cruiser was overspeeding as he clocked over 200 km/hr. He lost control at the bumps and rammed into the matatu. One person was confirmed dead."

"All five passengers in the Prado were rushed to hospital. The driver of the matatu has lost both his legs. We are urging road users to adhere to traffic laws in order to preserve life," Mwavyoga stated.

The tragedy comes barely two days after 18 people were killed in another crash on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Friday, July 8. 

Police reports revealed that a truck rammed into a matatu heading to Mombasa from Nairobi. 

According to the latest statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 1,912 people have died in road accidents from January 1, 2022, to June 1, 2022. 

This represented a nine percent increase from 1,754 fatalities recorded during the same period the previous year.
