Kirinyaga Governor Anne Wairugu's legacy on Wednesday, October 19 received a shot in the arm after she secured a development deal with the UK government.

According to the partnership, UK will fund three key development projects, in the health, agriculture, and energy sectors.

UK High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriot made the announcement during her visit to Kirinyaga county on Wednesday.

"The UK government will fund the construction of a tomato factory, a husks factory, and a hydropower project in the county," Marriot stated.

Subsequently, the hydropower project as an alternative source of electricity will reduce the cost of production of companies and also power street lights at a reduced cost.

Furthermore, Waiguru's contribution to the construction of an ultra-modern Level Five Hospital was termed as progressive and transformative.

Marriot also expressed confidence in Waiguru who is serving her second term, citing her exemplary leadership to propel devolution in the first term as governor.

She also congratulated governor Waiguru on her election as the Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG).

While in Kirinyaga, Marriot toured the Kerugoya Level Five Hospital which is yet to be completed.

Excited about the partnership, Waiguru acknowledged prior successful collaborations with the UK like the Sustainable Urban Economic Development (SUED) program.

"The establishment of a husks factory that will utilize raw materials from rice, coffee, and maize husks to make boards for furniture and ceiling. This will translate to more earnings for farmers as well as employment opportunities," Waiguru remarked.

The Governor noted the tomato factory is aimed at reducing the post-harvest losses accounting for 30 per cent of the total tomato production.

Poor pricing and the perishable nature of the tomatoes also contributed to the high post-harvest loss of the over 60,000 tonnes produced.
