Outcry as Boy Dies After Consuming Confiscated Alcohol

A young boy from Eldoret, Uasin Gishu county died after salvaging the little that was left from a consignment of destroyed alcohol.

The alcohol had been collected by the county government from different parts of the county as part of the nationwide crackdown on second generation alcohol.

The officials who gathered over Sh10 million worth of alcohol had proceeded to destroy it by setting it on fire.

Later when the fire had died down, young Joel and his friends- all street boys went looking in the mountain of alcohol bottles.

They gathered the traces of they found and drank all night- until Joel got stomach pains.

He took a nap, hoping the pain would pass.

He died in his sleep.

The two friends- also poisoned by the alcohol, barely made it out of the ordeal alive.

They have been hospitalized and continue to receive treatment.

Residents have called on the county government to find alternative ways of destroying alcohol that will not pose risk to addicts or alcohol dependents.
