Margaret Nyakang'o

Nyakang’o, an accomplished accountant and financial manager, was appointed as the Controller of Budget in 2019 by former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The 65-year-old, who hails from Nyamira County, is an accomplished academician and accountant with an impressive track record in public service.

She holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nairobi, and a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce from the same university.

Nyakang’o is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) and a Certified Sacco Professional from Strathmore University.

Before she was appointed the Controller of Budget, Nyakang’o served in several sectors, including as an employee of the Lake Basin Development Authority, Bob Harambee Sacco Society, and Mitun Business Consulting Limited.

She also served as the Director of Finance and Administration at the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) for about ten years.

While being vetted for the CoB position in November 2019, Nyakang’o revealed that she was worth Ksh68 million.

She termed her wealth as modest compared to other state officers, revealing that most of the wealth was the value of her house.

“We have just finished repaying our mortgage, and I have taken half of that house and put it in my declaration as part of my net worth,” she told the Parliament Vetting Committee at the time.
