Sharon Barang’a

Sharon Barang’a is an award-winning broadcast journalist with over a decade of experience in news reporting. She has earned several local, continental, and international accolades.

A proud and unapologetic Kenyan, Sharon is currently working at CGTN, where she passionately reports on education and children’s affairs.

Before joining CGTN, she worked for Nation Media Group’s (NMG) NTV Kenya, covering children’s stories. Her journey into this niche was serendipitous—while at NMG, a journalist reporting on children’s stories failed to show up.

Sharon volunteered to step in, and this marked the beginning of her specialisation in children’s reporting.

In 2017, she was selected for the Mandela Washington Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of State, where she studied civic leadership. She was also among the winners of the ICFJ Early Childhood Development Reporting Contest in 2016.

After being retrenched from NMG in June 2020, Sharon joined TV47 as an education editor two months later, a role she held until June 2023, when CGTN offered her a position.

Sharon is also a mentor with One Girl Can. She holds a Master of Arts in Translation from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Communication from the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
