Civil Society Push For Referendum Through Public Vote

Civil society under the umbrella of 'The Green Amendment Campaign', have began collecting signatures across the country. The organization aims to amend the constitution to realize the two third gender rule.

The representatives of the campaign have expressed confidence that they will be able to satisfy all the requirements within the next 3 weeks.

The campaign has two formulas which aims to get 136 seats from the current 47 or create 94 seats from the current 47.

During the launch, Nairobi Women's Steering Committee organizer Daisy Anday urged Kenyans to rally behind the campaign the way they did during the voting of the new constitution.

The campaign aims at creating 94 seats of which 6 will be left for people with disabilities, special interest groups and marginalized communities.

The campaign also wants to do away with nominations in county assemblies and limit the wards to 1,450.

The bill cannot be pushed to next year because MPs will be busy with 2017 campaigns.
