Govt Warns Heavy Rainfall For Nairobi & 37 Counties On Sunday

The government through the Ministry of Interior has warned that 37 counties would experience moderate to heavy rainfall on Sunday issuing advisories for the counties.

Within the Coastal region, Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, and Lamu are in the spotlight while in Western Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia will be affected by the heavy rainfall.

The Lake Victoria Basin within the Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, and Homabay Central may also experience flooding with the potential for flooding on Sunday.

For countries within Central Kenya, Nyeri, Muranga, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, and Nyandarua; are on the list while in Eastern Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru will also be affected.

Nairobi and the Rift Valley region are also listed as areas for potential flooding on Sunday.

However counties within the Northeastern region are predicted to experience generally drier periods, but with the potential of flooding following the spillage of dams such as the Seven Forks Dam.

The government has also warned that the counties in steep areas will likely witness landslides.

Additionally, within the Ministry of Interior’s update, it was noted that the Tropical Cyclone Hidaya Storm which was expected to hit Kenya’s coast has weakened but may result in large waves.

“The Tropical Cyclone Hidaya storm is over and forecasted to have weakened however, heavy rainfall is still expected offshore along the Coast region with strong winds and large waves already experienced in Kwale,” read the statement in part.

Further, the government confirmed that 228 people had lost their lives in the ongoing flooding situation while 72 people were missing.

Statistics depicting the number of displaced households reflect a total of 42,526 households having been affected and a total of  212,630 people.

However, the government confirmed having dispatched Kenya Defence Forces, and National Youth Service (NYS) to aid in relief efforts within the affected areas.
