Several people have reportedly been trapped beneath the rubble of a storey building that collapsed in the Mathare area of Nairobi on Tuesday.

The incident which occurred in the afternoon happened after the building which had been partially demolished became unstable.

Reports suggest that the more than ten trapped persons were mostly residents who had gone to collect scrap metal deemed up for grabs after the demolitions.

Following the incident, the Kenya Red Cross Society quickly scrambled a rescue operation to help save the victims.

"There are fears that multiple individuals may be trapped beneath the rubble. Our rescue team has been dispatched," the Kenya Red Cross confirmed.

In the widely circulated videos, residents living near the scene of tragedy could be spotted standing a distance away even as responders continued with their rescue efforts.

After about an hour of search, four people were successfully pulled out of the debris and were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital.

"Efforts to reach others suspected to be trapped continue," the Kenya Red Cross confirmed in a statement.

The incident comes barely four days after two people reportedly died while several others were rescued after a storey building collapsed in Bungoma County.

Witnesses claimed the building allegedly collapsed after it was partly demolished by the County Government  to pave the way for the expansion of the Masinde Muliro Stadium.

Photos obtained from the scene depicted the building bent on one of its sides with the lower section completely destroyed.

Moments after it collapsed, a group of area youth quickly rushed to the scene and began scavenging for scrap metal.

The incident came days after the Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo visited the area to inspect the Masinde Muliro stadium which was scheduled to host Madaraka Day celebrations.
