Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has completely banned the entry, distribution, sale and use of muguka and its products within the county.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 22, Nassir directed that all outlets, whether retail or wholesale selling Muguka in Mombasa County be closed immediately.

The third directive involved denying the entry of motor vehicles transporting muguka in the county.

He noted that the County Departments were mandated to enforce the order effective immediately.

"Now, therefore I Abdulswamad Sharrif Nassir, Governor of Mombasa, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and existing laws, do hereby order and direct that, there be a total prohibition on the entry, transportation, distribution, sale and use of muguka and its products within Mombasa County," the statement read in part.

Nassir's orders come days after he banned the sale of the product near schools.

The governor explained that his decision had factored in public sentiments through public participation as well as consultation from the National Authority for the Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NACADA).

Nassir also held a presser and emphasised that he had signed an executive order directing the ban of the product.

"The figures that are there from the government agencies NACADA are confirming that muguka has caused widespread damage, especially to our younger generation. We've tried to be able to work out a way in which we can come up with regulations, in ways in which we can say let us see how we can coexist so that our children don't get spoiled" he stated.

"Those who were dealing with this have refused and for that reason, I have consulted legally and it is found to be in order. I've signed an executive order to ban the entry and sale of muguka in Mombasa."

On May 18, the governor directed that all miraa shops located within 100 metres of schools, mosques and churches be closed.

While issuing the directive, Governor Nassir revealed that the business owners would be allocated designated operating areas at a later time.
