Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Nassir on Saturday, May 18 revealed that the county was in the process of closing all miraa shops located within 100 metres of schools, mosques and churches.
In a press briefing with several leaders from Mombasa and Meru County, Nassir announced that the businesses had been issued with a notice of closure.
"Our stance remains, we have already done the mapping of all schools and given notices of closure to these shops selling muguka outside schools," he revealed.
The County boss remarked that these business owners will have their own designated operating areas that will be announced at a later date.
He further noted that the county was committed to protecting children from these business owners who are selling the stimulant.
However, he emphasised that the county was also looking for ways to protect the business community by setting guidelines to streamline the sector.

"If you're a matatu driver, a tuk-tuk driver or a boda rider and decide to start chewing at 7 am then you are creating a problem. We are not doing this because we hate you but because we like you," he stated.
Governor Nassir reiterated that all traders who do not comply with the new guidelines will have their shops closed and licenses revoked adding, "This is non-negotiable. We will safeguard our children."
In the new regulations, fronted on May 13, persons transporting the crop were directed to ensure they have licenses and not to carry passengers while conducting their businesses.
In the new regulations, it was further revealed that the county shall retain the cess charges at Ksh80,000 per lorry.

Meru leaders led by Senator Kathuri Murungi, have embraced the proposals adding that it will help create proper structures for those selling the plant.
