An officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) was injured on Tuesday after a shoot-out at a bar in Maili Mbili trading centre in Kisii County.
According to the police report seen by Kenyans.co.ke on Wednesday, the officer was revelling at a local entertainment joint when the locals noticed that he was armed.
"One officer attached to DCI Manga Sub County was on a drinking spree with a group of people in one million bar when he was detected of having a firearm," read part of the police report.
The locals attempted to seize the firearm from the detective which led to an altercation at the club at around 11.02 pm.
As the scuffle ensued, the officer was accused of firing his gun which injured two locals who were subsequently rushed to hospital nursing serious injuries.
Following the shooting, angry residents at the club attacked the officer injuring him severely. As the situation threatened to get out of hand, the officer was rescued from the angry crowd by police officers who had just arrived at the scene.
"The officer was subjected to mob injustice by the public. He was rescued and escorted to Oasis Hospital where he is admitted in fair condition," read part of the report.
As indicated in the report, police officers would then recover a CZ Gilboa pistol with 13 rounds of 9mm live rounds and 1 spent cartridge of 9mm. The scene was processed with the DCI in Kisii Central leading the investigations into the incident.
This incident comes a week after another police officer was arrested in Kiambu County after a shooting incident was reported at a nightclub in Kiambu. The shooting claimed the life of one civilian.
In April, another officer was shot dead at a club in Marakwet while watching a football match. The officer lost his life before he was rushed to hospital.
Similarly, in December 2023, another shooting incident involving a police officer was reported in Nakuru County. One reveller was shot dead.
Research conducted by various institutions including The National Police Service (NPS) attributes some of the shootings involving police officers to mental health issues directly linked to the nature of their jobs.
NPS has already started offering counselling to officers to limit the number and frequency of such occurrences in future.
