The office of the Attorney General was on Saturday, June 8, put on the spot for allegedly disposing of 59 grounded vehicles at a throwaway price.

While examining the financial report for the State Law Office, the National Assembly Public Accounts Committee was shocked to learn that at least 59 grounded vehicles were sold for Ksh7 million.

The legislators also discovered that the logbooks for 10 vehicles purchased by the office were not submitted to the Auditor General for audit.

Solicitor General Shadrack Mose, while appearing before the committee, was compelled to explain why the Office of the Attorney General sold the government vehicles at such a low price.

In his response, Mose admitted that in the financial year 2022/23, the State Law Office disposed of the grounded motor vehicles through a public auction for Ksh7,081,000.

He also acknowledged inconsistencies between the vehicle register and the list provided by the procurement department.

The Solicitor General admitted that, at the time of the audit, the asset register had not been updated.

He further assured the committee that the asset register has since been updated to include all vehicles.

According to him, this will help address concerns raised by the Auditor-General regarding the purchase of new vehicles by the office.

However, MP Mbadi expressed concerns about potential manipulation, noting the office submitted only a notice of intention to sell the vehicles at Ksh7 million.

Mbadi emphasized the need for the committee to receive detailed pricing information for each vehicle.

Following the concerns, the committee directed the State Law Office to provide the reserve price of each vehicle, the identity of the highest bidder, and relevant documents to verify the sale of the 59 government vehicles.

"We want to ensure that Kenyans receive value for their money," Mbadi noted.
