The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party National Elections Board on Saturday postponed planned grassroots elections in Nairobi.

In a notice dated June 7, the party elections board chairman Anthony Mwaura noted the move was in line with an initial order issued on June 6.

According to Mwaura, the initial order by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal directed the suspension of the elections in Nairobi County.

The grassroots elections which were scheduled for June 10 will now take place at a later date.

“The Board will provide further communication regarding the rescheduled date and any additional instructions in due course,” Mwaura announced.

“We regret any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding and cooperation in this matter,” he added.

The postponement comes a day after Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja expressed confidence in winning Monday’s contest for UDA chairmanship.

Sakaja while addressing the press after meeting the party elections board exuded confidence in defeating his arch-political nemesis and Embakasi North MP James Gakuya.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, Gakuya expressed his dissatisfaction with the preparedness of the Nairobi elections claiming unfair considerations.

According to Gakuya, there were plans to lock out some candidates who had swept posts at the constituency and ward levels.

Earlier this week, Gakuya threatened to lead mass defection from UDA if he lost the Nairobi County elections.

“If I lose this seat, it will be obvious that we have no place in this Party as a community. We shall go ahead and join a new party,” Gakuya alleged during an interview with a local radio station.
