A 20-year-old man who pretended to be a customer before robbing a shop and going away with Ksh50,000 in Maralal has been arrested.

The suspect and an accomplice entered the store while posing as regular customers, according to a statement released by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on September 18.

DCI said that moments later, the suspects pulled out guns and pointed them at the cashier.

“Suspect armed with an AK-47 rifle and accompanied by an accomplice who remains at large brazenly stormed a local shop in Maralal. Posing as ordinary customers, the duo quickly turned the situation deadly when they drew firearms, aiming them directly at the cashier,” part of the statement reads.

The detective added that the cashier, who was a lady, pushed one of the guns away, though the arrested suspect fired a shot that grazed her, leaving her with an injury.

“In a moment of courage, the cashier managed to push the weapon away, but not before one of the suspects fired a shot, resulting in a bullet grazing her left breast and inflicting a painful soft tissue injury,” DCI noted.

The lady was reportedly rushed to Samburu County Referral Hospital, treated and discharged in a stable condition.

The suspects during the robbery managed to get away with Ksh50,000 following a manhunt from the Samburu detectives.

During the search, the detective arrested a suspect after catching him in his hideout. DCI noted that the suspect is still in police custody, awaiting arraignment, adding that a manhunt is ongoing for his accomplice.

Suspect was found in possession of items such as a green jungle hat, a smoke jacket, a jungle green jacket, and a jungle belt, which are believed to belong to him.

The arrest came days after five suspects were nabbed on September 16, in connection with a robbery in which goods worth Ksh5.4 million were stolen and an assault on a driver in Embu County.
