Five people were on Wednesday trapped after a four-storey building collapsed in the Gateway area of Mathare North, Nairobi County on Wednesday.
Preliminary reports suggest the building had been partially demolished when it caved in with people inside.
While reporting the matter, the Kenya Red Cross Society noted that two casualties had been rescued in the search process.
First aid was administered on the victims before they were rushed to hospital for specialised treatment.
A rescue operation was conducted by a multi-agency team comprising officers from the Kenya Red Cross, the National Police Service and officers from the Nairobi Disaster Management.
“Five people are suspected to be trapped beneath the rubble. Our team is on the scene,” the Kenya Red Cross revealed.
"While two more people are suspected to be trapped. Search and rescue operations are still ongoing," it added.
It is not the first time a partially demolished building has collapsed in the same area. In a similar situation on May 14, several people lost their lives after being trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.
According to witnesses, more than ten trapped people who were mostly residents had gone to collect scrap metal deemed up for grabs after demolitions.
In the widely circulated videos, residents living near the scene of tragedy could be spotted standing a distance away even as responders continued with their rescue efforts.
After about an hour of search, four people were successfully pulled out of the debris and were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital.
"Efforts to reach others suspected to be trapped continue," the Kenya Red Cross confirmed in a statement.
