Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has declared Monday, June 17 a public holiday.
In a gazette notice, the CS noted that the declaration was made in line with the celebration of Eid-Al-Adha by the Muslim community.
The declaration was also made in line with the powers bestowed on the CS by the Public Holidays Act.
"It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 2 (1) of the Public Holidays Act, declares Monday, the 17th June, 2024, shall be a public holiday to mark Eid-Al-Adha," read the notice in part.
Eid-ul-Adha is often referred to as the festive of sacrifice.
It is celebrated by Muslims across the world to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim's devotion to Allah.
Prophet Ibrahim is remembered for his dedication and willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
As detailed in the Quran, Allah provided a ram to Prophet Ibrahim before he sacrificed his son.
Therefore, as part of the celebrations, Muslims will sacrifice an animal and share the meat with those who are disadvantaged in the community.
The festivity also comes during the ending of the annual pilgrimage to Mecca.
Notably, Eid-ul-Adha comes after the Eid-al-Fitr celebration which is used to mark the completion of the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Eid al-Fitr was celebrated early in the year on April 10.
This is after Muslims observed 30 days of fasting from March 11, 2024.
