The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) on Sunday, June 23, advised journalists and media practitioners on how to protect themselves from teargas while covering Finance Bill protests.
MCK advised journalists to seek immediate exit from scenes when police officers start using tear gas or bullets to disperse protestors.
Additionally, the media practitioners should make sure they carry water and a handkerchief at all times in case they are not able to exit the scene in time and are exposed to tear gas.
“Remove contact lenses as the chemical reaction could cause them to fuse into the eye,” journalists are advised on what to do when exposed to teargas.
MCK also warns of the use of cosmetics while covering protests advising that they can become irritable when in contact with tear gas.
Journalists were further advised to resist the urge to rub eyes when exposed to teargas.
While covering protests, media practitioners should also consider walking into the wind to air eyes and clothing.
“Carry water to flush eyes - mixing it with anti-acids like milk of magnesia to quicken relief,” journalists are further told.
Other safety measures to consider when covering the protests include avoiding confronting demonstrators or security personnel.
While journalists are advised to avoid masked rioters, MCK has advised them to have protective gear as well as identification.
Female journalists have been asked to consider the possibility of assault and should consider escort.
MCK has also requested journalists to have prior knowledge of the risks involved in covering the protests and region and always work in groups with colleagues.
